You Can Code!

Free workshop for beginners in Leipzig: October 19-20, 2019

Django Girls Workshop

Oktober, in Leipzig statt.

Django Girls Workshop

Would you like to know about how to build websites, how the internet works and you would like to try programming, but don’t know where to start? We have good news for you: we are holding a workshop for beginners!

Django Girls Leipzig is part of Django Girls, a worldwide volunteer driven initiative that is aiming to introduce women* who have never coded before to the world of technology and increase diversity. We believe that technology is for people and everyone should be able to build it. That is why we want to give you an opportunity to learn how to program and start creating things.

During the workshop you will work through a tutorial in a small group of three attendees and one mentor. Our mentors are software developers who contribute their time, knowledge and energy for you and Django Girls.

The workshop takes place on Saturday/Sunday, October 19th-20th in Leipzig.

Being our attendee, you will:

  • get to know something about programming, the web and internet technologies.
  • try to program your own webapp from scratch, of course with the help of your coach.
  • meet great people and have loads of fun :-)

You can attend the workshop for free! Just your motivation counts, let us know about it in your application!

*The workshop is particularly aimed at women and all people who identify themselves as not male.

FAQ

Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

No! Workshops are for beginners. You don’t need to know anything about it. However, if you have a little bit of technical knowledge (i.e. you know what HTML or CSS are) you still can apply!

Should I bring my own laptop?

Yes. We have no hardware, so we expect you to bring your computer with you. It is also important for us that you will take home everything you’ll write and create during the workshop.

Do I need to have something installed on my laptop?

It would be helpful to have Django installed before workshops, but we wouldn't expect you to install anything on your own. There will be an "installation evening" before and/or we will make sure that one of our coaches will help you out with this task.

I am not living in Germany, can I attend?

Of course! Workshops will be in English and German, so if you have no troubles with speaking and understanding English or German - you should apply!

Who can apply?

Django Girls is dedicated to providing a harassment-free workshop experience for everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. Every participant needs to follow the Code of Conduct.

The workshop is particularly aimed at women and all people who identify themselves as not male. If you are not sure if you should apply, it might help you to answer the following question: Imagine a group composed of you and 20 persons randomly selected from all people who identify as "male". Would you consider yourself to be in a minority within that group? If yes, then you are belonging to the group of persons this workshop is addressed to. Please consider, that our mentors do identify themselves differently, also as male. They are all part of the community that is committed to more diversity in the tech field and they all have agreed to our code of conduct.

Is food provided?

Yes, if there will be enough sponsoring, snacks and drinks will be served during the workshop.

How much fee do the mentors get?

The mentors are here for you as volunteers and don't get any fee. They enjoy it and look forward to sharing their knowledge with you. Because everyone has started sometime and that is much easier with help :-).
