Django Girls

In line with Young African Women in Computing's goal to increase the partcipation of young women in computing, we are holding a one-day web programming workshop for high school girls in Port Elizabeth!

This event will take place on 29th February 2020 at Nelson Mandela University - Embizweni Building in Port Elizabeth.

We believe the IT industry will greatly benefit from more women being involved in technology. We want to give young girls an opportunity to learn how to code and become one of us – women programmers!

Who's attending Django Girls Port Elizabeth?

Up to 42 girls from Ethembeni Enrichment Centre, Kwazakhele High School, Qaphelani High School, Khumbulani High School, and Sophakama High School in Port Elizabeth will join us for this workshop!

All guests will:

  • attend a one-day Django workshop during which they will create a website with the guidance of a coach and facilitator
  • be fed by us: during our event, food is provided
  • have fun!

Schedule

  • 08:00 AM - Doors open, students arrive
  • 08:30 AM - Breakfast served, Welcome presentation, Coaches introduced
  • 09:00 AM - Workshop begins! Students and coaches follow Django Girls tutorial
  • 12:00 PM - Lunch time. Let's eat!
  • 12:45 PM - Talk from Jabu Sibanyoni (Amazon Web Services)
  • 01:00 PM - Return to work
  • 03:30 PM - Photos and snack break
  • 04:00 PM - Wrap up work
  • 04:30 PM - Presentations and closing
  • 05:00 PM - Students taken home
  • Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

    No! Workshops are for beginners. You don’t need to know anything about it. However, if you have a little bit of technical knowledge (i.e. you know what HTML or CSS are) you are still welcome.

    How do I apply to join this event?

    There are no public applications for this event. Participants will come from selected schools that will benefit from exposing their students to web development.

    Should I bring my own laptop?

    No. Computers in the university labs have been reserved for Django Girls attendees for the duration of the event.

    Will I need to install the software myself?

    No. We will prepare the software for you to use beforehand.

    Is food provided?

    Yes! We will provide meals, snacks and drinks for all attendees.

    Who are the coaches?

    The coaches are senior students at Nelson Mandela University who are members of YAWIC and studying in the Department of Computing Sciences or School of IT.
