Django Girls

If you identify as a woman and want to learn how to make web applications, we have good news for you: we are holding a one-day workshop for beginners!

When: Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 9:30am-4:00pm; Install party on Thursday November 15, 2018 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Where: Common Code HQ, 8 - 10 Studley St, Abbotsford VIC 3067
Bring: Laptop, charger, water bottle & learning mindset
Cost: Fully subsidised! Need assistance in getting to Melbourne from regional Victoria? Email us!

Thursday evening will be our install party where we install all the necessary requirements for the workshop and you'll get the opportunity to meet some of your fellow participants and coaches. It's pretty casual. If you can't make the Thursday, that's ok! It doesn't disqualify you from applying. If you can't make it on the Thursday for the install party, we'll help get you sorted for Saturday beforehand to give you the most amount of time to work on the actual tutorial.

We believe improving diversity will greatly benefit STEM industries and we aim to encourage more women and gender minorities to enter into technology by providing an entry point. The future is diverse. We want to offer you the opportunity to learn the basics of programming in a safe environment. Who knows, maybe you'll even end up changing careers! We're here to support you and your journey.

Apply for the workshop!

Do you identify as a woman or gender minority? Do you have a laptop? Then you're eligible to apply for our workshop! You don't need to know anything technical – our workshop is for those that are completely new to programming. It's a great non-confrontational introductory workshop.

Don't identify as a woman? That's ok! We accept applications from all genders, including men. However, women and other gender minorities will be given preference. There are only 60 spots available.

By becoming an attendee you'll:

  • learn to create your first website
  • be fed by us during the events
  • meet other people looking to learn new skills
  • connect with experts who work in the field
  • learn the basics of programming with mentors that do this everyday
  • find out how to switch your career with your new skills

Applications are now OPEN!

Applications have been extended until Friday 9th November at 11am! Get in quick! We will notify you by November 10th if your application was successful. We have limited spots so be sure to let us know why you want to attend.

Be a Mentor!

We would be delighted if you would like to join us as a mentor! Mentors play an integral role in creating a safe and supportive learning environment for everyone. Mentors can identify as female, male or non-binary but must have a positive attitude. It's a really great way to get more involved in the Django and Python communities as well as help solidify your own knowledge by teaching others.

FAQs

Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

Nope! Workshops are for beginners. You don’t need to know anything about it. However, if you have a little bit of technical knowledge (i.e. you know what HTML or CSS are) you still can apply!

I live in regional Victoria, can I attend?

Of course! If you need financial support to get to Melbourne or you need assistance with booking the train or hotel in Melbourne - let us know. We are willing to help you!

Should I bring my own laptop?

Yes. Unfortunately, we have no hardware, so we require you to bring a laptop with you. Ideally, bring a personal laptop so you can effectively install software etc and can continue to use your new skills beyond the workshop on your own device! Where possible, do not bring your work laptop. Often the restrictions around installations are pretty tricky. If you bring your partners or friends laptop, please be sure you have master admin capabilities.

Do I need to have something installed on my laptop?

It would be helpful to have Django installed before workshops, but we wouldn't expect you to install anything on your own. We will make sure that one of our coaches will help you out with this task during our install party.

Is food provided?

Yes. Thanks to our sponsors, coffee, snacks and lunch will be served at the workshops!

Is the venue accessible?

Unfortunately, only parts of the venue are accessible. If you have any accessibility requirements, please advise us in your registration so we can work with you to determine appropriate arrangements.

Do DjangoGirls host followup events after the workshops?

Generally, no. However! There is a strong Python/Django community in Melbourne and we encourage you to attend meetup events such as PyLadies, Peer to Peer tech nights & MelbDjango.
