Django Girls

If you are a woman and want to learn how to make websites, we have good news for you: we are holding a one-day workshop for beginners!

When: August 4 from 5:30-7:30pm & August 5 from 9am-5pm
Where: Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Center in Melbourne, Australia
Bring: Laptop, charger, & learning mindset
Cost: Free! Need assistance in getting to Melbourne from regional Victoria? Email us!

We're teaming up with PyConAU this time to host DjangoGirls during the premier python conference. This means we'll have coaches from all around Australia & as a DjangoGirls participant, you'll get access to a discounted ticket to check out the rest of the conference on Sunday!

Friday evening will be our install party (venue TBD) where we install all the necessary requirements for the workshop and you'll get the opportunity to meet your feelow participants and coaches. It's pretty casual. If you can't make the Friday, that's ok! It doesn't disqualify you from applying. If you can't make it on the Friday for the install party, we'll help get you sorted for Saturday beforehand to give you the most amount of time to work on the actual tutorial.

We believe the tech industry will greatly benefit from bringing more women into technology. We want to offer you the opportunity to learn the basics of programming in a safe environment. Who knows, maybe you'll even end up transitioning careers!

Apply for the workshop!

Do you identify as a woman? Do you have a laptop? Then you're eligible to apply for our workshop! You don't need to know anything technical – our workshop is for women who are completely new to programming. It's a great non-confrontational introductory workshop.

Don't identify as a woman? That's ok! We accept applications from men as well. However, women will be given preference. There are only 60 spots available this time.

By becoming an attendee you'll:

  • learn to create your first website
  • be fed by us during the event
  • meet other women looking to learn new skills
  • connect with experts who work in the field
  • learn the basics of programming with mentors that do this everyday
  • find out how to switch your career with your new skills
  • get a discount to PyConAu 2017, the premier python conference

FAQs

Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

No! Workshops are for beginners. You don’t need to know anything about it. However, if you have a little bit of technical knowledge (i.e. you know what HTML or CSS are) you still can apply!

I live in regional Victoria, can I attend?

Of course! If you need financial aid to get to Melbourne or you need assistance with booking the train or hotel in Melbourne - let us know. We are willing to help you!

Should I bring my own laptop?

Yes. We have no hardware, so we expect you to bring your computer with you. Please do not bring your work laptop. Often the restrictions around installations is pretty tricky. If you bring your partners or friends laptop, please be sure you have master admin capabilities. It is also important for us that you will take home everything you’ll write and create during workshops.

Do I need to have something installed on my laptop?

It would be helpful to have Django installed before workshops, but wouldn't expect you to install anything on your own. We will make sure that one of our coaches will help you out with this task during our install party.

Is food provided?

Yes. Thanks to Common Code & PyConAU, snacks and lunch will be served during workshops.

Be a Coach!

We would be delighted if you would like to join us as a mentor! Please fill in this short form and send us your application.

As PyConAu is being held at the same time, we'll be running shifts for coaches so they may also attend the conference. Be sure to let us know on the form which shift(s) you can be there. DjangoGirls is at the same venue as PyConAu so it should be easy to float.
