Online programming workshop

Build your first website with the help of CERN coaches!

Online Django Girls

  • An initiation day into computer programming;
  • Inspirational meetings with specialists in digital and web technologies;
  • A friendly, fun and positive learning environment.

To celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day (ICT = information and communication technologies) in April 2022, three CERN teams are joining forces to organize a 100% virtual edition of Django Girls Geneva: the Women in Technology community, the Visits and Events Operations section and the Microclub.

This workshop will make you discover the art of programming by creating your own blog and publishing it on the web. Maybe will you be taken by the computing fever?

There will be an installation party on the evening of Thursday 28 April where you will meet your coach as well as your team, and install the softwares you will need for the Saturday workshop.

On Saturday 30 April, we will have the full-day workshop where you will create your first website, supervised by CERN engineer trainers.

Places are limited, so make sure to fill out the application form very carefully!

Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

No. The workshop is for beginners. You don’t need to know anything about it. However, if you have a little bit of technical knowledge (i.e. you know what HTML or CSS are) you still can apply!

Je ne parle que le français, puis-je y assister ?

Bien sûr ! L'atelier se déroulera en anglais et en français avec l'aide de nos excellents coachs.

What computer equipment do I need to participate?

Participants must have a personal computer (ideally connected to two screens), equipped with a webcam, a microphone, a browser and a stable internet connection for the duration of the event, available throughout the event.

Do I need to have a particular software installed on my laptop?

You will need to install or update the Zoom videoconferencing software before the event, to make sure you have the latest version. We are organizing an install party on the evening of Thursday 28 April, so that your laptops are perfectly configured for the workshop.

What is the format of the workshop? What if I have trouble keeping up?

During the workshop, you will work in small groups of 3 particpants each. Each group works with a dedicated coach. The coaches are experienced software developers, and excited to volunteer their time, knowledge, and energy for Django Girls.

8 hours in front of a computer is a long time. Will we have some breaks?

Yes ! You can take breaks when needed during the workshop sessions. Activities will be organized between the sessions to change your mind (sport, meetings with professionals, virtual coffees). Participation in these activities is optional.

100% virtual workshop

With the Zoom videoconferencing tool.

Instructions and link to join the videoconference room will be shared by email with successful applicants.

Our awesome coaches

During the workshops you'll work in small groups of 3 persons. Each group will be tutored by one coach - experienced member of Python and Django community who will volunteer their time, knowledge and energy for Django Girls.
