FAQ

Do I need to know anything about websites or programming?

No, the workshop is for absolute beginners, as well as for those who have some experience with programming but haven't yet tried Python and the Django framework or web development.

Should I bring my own laptop?

Yes please, bring your own device. There is no computer lab available for this event. Oh, and don't forget your mouse 🐭 and charger πŸ”Œ.

Do you provide meals during the event?

Yes, you don't have to worry about anything other than learning, getting confident experimenting with tech and having fun during the event. We'll have all your meals (breakfast, lunch, snacks) prepared and they will be for free.

Who can apply?

The event is open for women, underrepresented groups and allies. Every participant needs to follow the Code of Conduct.

I'm a man and I'd love to attend and learn with you, may I apply?

The event is open for allies of women in tech, including men advocates of equity in the workplace. If you identify as an ally, please apply! We'd be glad to have you. 🀩

I'm not a SESer, may I apply?

Of course, there are spots reserved for external participants. However, the number is limited as the SES campus in Betzdorf is not open to the general public.

What do you mean by underrepresented groups?

Within the framework of this event, we consider as underrepresented, groups whose representation in their profession is significantly lower than their representation in the general population. In this category we include minority groups of the general population as well. Moreover, groups whose representation in tech roles has been historically low are added here. The list includes but is not limited to the following examples: people of color, people with disabilities, people from a lower socioeconomic status, transgendered, non-binary, people of a non-dominant religion, retirees, women in tech, men in a women-dominated professional environment.

As a SESer, do I have to get the day off in order to participate?

If you're participating as a coach, please consider registering the day of the event as a give-back to the community activity. This day will not be deducted from your vacation time, it's an extra day for a good cause. ❀️ If you're participating as an attendee, please discuss this as a training option with your manager. We'd be happy to provide managers with more information on the training material and the importance of the workshop for your personal and professional development.πŸ‘©‍πŸš€πŸŒˆπŸ‘¨‍πŸš€

Would English be the coaching language?

We expect the environment to be international, therefore the main language of the event will be English. However, we assume that apart from English some of the coaches may also be fluent in either Luxembourgish or French or German or even your mother tongue. There are relevant questions in the application forms of attendees and coaches to help us make the best possible matches.

What will I learn during the workshop?

Under the guidance of your coach you'll learn the basics of programming in Python. You'll experiment with web development and try the Django framework. You'll get to use tools such as code editors and version control systems, as well as the command line. Don't let the terms scare you, we'll work on this together at the workshop! ✌️

Is there an age limit?

Participants should be at least 18 years old. Exceptions may only be made for children of SESers upon parent's approval for applicants who are 14 years old or older. There's no upper age limit, it's never too late to develop a new skill. We'd love to support you in becoming more tech savvy! πŸ™Œ

Will I get a certificate?

Workshops organized in the context of a Django Girls event are not certified trainings. We'll only provide you with a certificate of participation.
